No one knows exactly what the people of the old world believed, and a number of ancestor cults and syncretic beliefs have shot up to fill the theological void. A common belief in the city states, based upon the ruined buildings and monuments from the old world, is that the people where once ruled by the Overseers, who in turn served unknow higher powers. The Overseers left before the shattering, and their place is held today by the Underseers, the ruling caste of most of the city states.

People worship the Overseers, and pay for the spirits of their ancestors to intercede with the Overseers and entice them to return to the world and start a new golden age. The beliefs emphasize:

  • Faith in the Overseers: Those who fulfill their duties and remain loyal to their clan and caste will ascend to serve the Overseers in their lofty High Chambers.
  • Fear of the Darkness Below: The ultimate punishment for breaking societal norms or betraying the covenant is eternal damnation in the place of chains and thirst.

The rituals and practices of this faith involve daily offerings and strict adherence to one’s role in life.
